Mplayerx 1 1 0 – Alternative Modern Media Player Free
I've spent the last few weeks experimenting with MPlayerX for Mac and would like to introduce and recommend it to anyone who may not be aware of it. MplayerX is a highly capable FREE open source media player that in many ways is similar to VLC from VideoLAN. (Similar to Quicktime too.) It can open and play just about any video codec you will encounter anywhere and it is even said that it can open files the VLC can't but I don't really know. It has some cool features and capabilities that both VLC and Quicktime Player don't have but it also lacks some features that the other players do have such as the playlist feature in VLC. MPLayerX is under active development so new features are being added and bugs are being squashed on an ongoing basis.
To avoid confusion, let me make it clear that there is a distinction between MPlayerX for Mac OSX which I am recommending here and the original MPlayer project that I am discussing below for background and historical context.
MPlayerX is a port of the venerable MPlayer Project that has been around in one form or another since all the way back in 2000. MPlayer was/is well known to gamers and it was bundled with many gaming systems for years. MPlayer is available for virtually all major operating systems including Linux, Windows, Mac, etc. plus various obscure and out of date OSes. It is available in many languages.
MPlayer is open source and enjoys an active community of developers and enthusiasts. It can be download for almost any OS and supports an almost mind bending array of codecs, inputs, devices, browsers, plug-ins etc, etc. The caveat is that MPlayer code does not come with a front end..NO GUI. It is a command line application and you need to engage in some geeky procedures to use and install any of the variety of GUI front-ends available. So, this is not for everybody.

OK, so now, back to MPlayerX. As previously stated, MPlayerX for Macintosh OSX is a FREE port of the original MPlayer with an excellent modern GUI fully compatible with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 that is being actively developed and improved on an ongoing basis. It is available on Apple's App Store for download. (but I don't advise that you get it there - as I will explain below.)
So far, I'm really pleased with it and excited to find another tool to keep in my arsenal of apps for viewing and working with dash cam videos. Every player seems to have it's strengths and weaknesses and MPlayerX is no different but I've found it's definitely worth having on hand. One thing I find is that it offers much smoother playback of .AVI files than VLC as one example. And one of my favorite features of MPlayerX is the ability to stream YouTube or Vimeo video directly which provides for a far superior and higher quality viewing experience than in a web browser. You can also drag a video URL directly to the MPlayerX icon in the dock and it will launch the streaming window without having to navigate to the software or menus. The software is fully compatible with Apple's Remote control and the video can be gesture controlled with pinches, taps and swipes on any modern Mac with a Multi-touch Trackpad. There is a lot to explore and it's certainly worth downloading and checking out if you are on a Mac system.

While you can find and download MPlayerX from Apple's App store, it is an older version that needs to be updated. The developer of MPlayerX has decided that Apple's sandboxing requirements are too restrictive for the features people enjoy about this software, so the latest version really needs to be downloaded directly. Go HERE to read a full explanation from the developer regarding his decision to leave the Mac App Store. I guess he maintains the presence on the App store for the exposure it provides. Finally, here is an interesting review/overview and comparison between MPlayerX and VLC for Mac. Just keep in mind that many (but not all) of his complaints and criticisms are no longer valid as they have been addressed in more recent versions of MPlayerX.
